Baby Oscar
Goals
Oscar’s parents were looking for him to consolidate his night sleep and for him to sleep for longer stretches overnight. We also looked to focus on him dropping his feed to sleep association, which were all great goals to aim for.
We discussed what techniques Oscar’s parents would be happy and comfortable to work with, we settled on a check and console approach where we would give Oscar a chance to resettle himself on his own, whilst reducing his feeds down. This approach fitted and worked for the whole family and something that his parents were happy with.
Feed to sleep
The feed to sleep association can be very strong and can take time to drop and this is something that we discussed with Oscar’s parents. Therefore we looked for a gradual approach to reducing the amount of time Oscar fed each night and then gradually cutting these feeds out completely.
Firstly we adjusted Oscar’s day and implemented an age-appropriate routine, which he adapted well to. For his overnight sleep, Oscar’s parent used the settling technique discussed, which helped Oscar to self-settle without their assistance, and gradually they began to cut back his overnight feeds.
The initial first few nights this change was met by protest from Oscar but as the nights went on he began to wake less and less, slowly dropping his feed to sleep association and he began to resettle more quickly without any assistance from mum and dad. These were all great results, mum and dad’s hard work and consistency were beginning to pay off.
Outcome
By the end of week one, Oscar was consolidating his sleep to a FULL 12 hours and had dropped his feed to sleep association. His parents were so happy with the changes and could see a happier and more settled baby.
